Aim and specific objectives

Aim

To produce material which teachers can use to establish the level of the reading and writing of YLs between 9 and 13 years, which will ultimately be linked to the CEFR. Features will be identified that characterise FL literacy in YLs, as they pass approximately through the A1 to B1 stages of the CEFR.
Specific objectives
  1. To develop a tool for teachers to use to judge whether a reader is able to read a given text.

  1. To follow the reading of pupils at half-year intervals, over two years, identifying a series of texts they are able to read, and assessing the pupils' reading on the CEFR scale through test items and teacher judgements; this will ultimately lead to a set of general descriptors of texts, illustrated with benchmarks, representing a range of levels/sublevels for reading on the CEFR.

  1. To follow the writing of pupils over a period of 2 years, and to judge the pupils' products with reference to the CEFR.
  2. To analyse the writing of pupils at half-year intervals, noting features as they emerge, and linking these to CEFR levels; this will ultimately lead to a set of general descriptors of writing, illustrated with benchmark written products, representing a range of levels/sublevels on the CEFR.
